Why You Should Never Throw Away Orange or Banana Peels

The peels of fruits hold some of the most incredible nutrients in the world. There are dozens of uses, both medicinal and practical, for orange and banana peels that are unknown to most. Next time you think about throwing away one of these peels, you may want to have this information handy.

ORANGE PEELS

Always try and minimize your pesticide levels by selecting organic oranges, but since they’re very low in the pesticides, it’s not essential and a good cleaning with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar in 1 cup of water will remove almost any pesticide remaining within the outer peel.

Orange peel and apple skin are similar since most of the nutrients and benefits are in the skin of these fruits. According to Rebecca Wood, author of The New Whole Foods Encyclopedia, “One medium orange contains over 60 flavonoids and 170 different phytonutrients.” They are good for your skin, your system and your home too. Dr. Jaishree Bhattacharjee, Ayurvedic consultant with Satvikshop helps us find out it’s different uses.

Medicinal Properties of Orange Peels

As per Ayurveda, orange peel is tikta (bitter) and it improves digestion and removes sluggishness in the abdomen. It helps to remove gas, heartburn, vomiting and acidic eructation. It works well in perking up appetite and relieving nausea.

Due to its pacifying properties, orange peel powder helps dissolving phlegm in respiratory systems and alleviate cough, asthama etc.

Beneficiary aspects of orange peels come from its essential oils, which have anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. Essential oil d-limonene has ability to defuse stomach acids and maintain normal intestinal movements. It also promotes normal liver function.

Studies have shown that orange peel can dissolve cholesterol and triglyceride. That means consumption of orange peel can benefit obese persons who have high cholesterol levels. It has a flavonoid known as hesperidine, which is said to be effective against colon cancer and osteoporosis.

Essential oils from orange peels are sedative in nature so can be used to calm nerves and induce sleep. Use orange peels in baths or simmer in a pot for uplifting your mood and drive away insomnia.

Beauty Properties of Orange Peels

Oily skin responds well to application of orange peels. It balances the skin oils and makes skin smooth and soft.

Dried orange peel beads act as natural exfoliators and remove dead cells and blackheads gently and naturally, bringing a glow to the skin.

Orange peels help in removing dark spots and blemishes.

Due to its cleansing, anti inflammatory, anti bacterial and antifungal properties, it works well against pus filled pimples and acne.

To remove damp or musky odor from house and fill it with beautiful fragrance, it can be boiled in water with clove or cinnamon.

BANANA PEELS

Again, as with oranges try and make sure you use organic banana peels to reduce pesticide levels, otherwise the natural organic wash mentioned above will suffice.

Banana peels are chock-a-block with antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins, so they’re a natural cure for many an ailment and an aid for cell regeneration. Here are just a few uses:

Three common chemicals in conventional food that are very dangerous to your health.

Fluoride, bleach and pesticide – three common chemicals in conventional food

Oh, the power of food to heal you, to prevent cancer and to make you feel wonderful, full of life and positive energy. It’s amazing, and millions of people know. Then, there are the others. Some have been conned and some don’t care too much about their health — not in the short term or the long run. “They” are living for today, and that’s it. Then, in come the food toxins, and not just additives and preservatives, but the most lethal concoctions on planet Earth, little by little by little.
Food chemicals are powerful. They can stave off mold and mildew and they can kill certain bacteria, including Salmonella and E. coli. Food chemicals kill insects, worms, beetles and some of the weeds that choke out crops. Plus, there’s fluoride, very toxic fluoride, in most municipal tap water. The bottom line is that chemicals kill good bacteria, and this is the number one detriment to all immunity. No wonder vaccines are so dangerous! People who eat nutrient-dead food regularly are getting shots full of chemicals. Eventually, after 10 to 20 years of consuming powerful food chemicals, putting toxins on your skin and having them injected into muscle tissue regularly (vaccines and flu shots), the human body breaks down, suffering from lack of flora and minerals, and that’s when the walking-talking machine you once knew falls apart.
What do you think you are eating if you don’t choose organic? Are you drinking insecticide (tap water) regularly because your “city” or “town” thinks that it’s safe? Based on what? Here’s some research from an earlier Natural News report by Mike Adams:
“What cities call ‘fluoride’ is actually a toxic cocktail of over 100 deadly industrial chemicals and heavy metals, many of which are purchased in bulk from China, where industrial processing plants are trying to get rid of their excess toxic waste by labeling it ‘sodium fluoride.’”
Do you eat white food regularly? It’s bleached! We’re talking about white flour, white pasta, white bread, white rice, white sugar, and you get the point. Every major junk food chain that sells rolls, buns, pizza dough, sub sandwiches, and so on, is selling you bleach that’s processed with so many food additives that you can’t taste it. Would you drink bleach at home if you couldn’t taste it or add it to your favorite meals? What if some corporation added vitamin C to your bleach, would you drink it then?
And then there’s pesticide. Oh, how the pesticide wrecks our health, and so quickly! Would you eat a cucumber or perhaps some lettuce from your own garden that you accidentally sprayed with a boatload of RoundUp herbicide? Yes, weeds are also pests, not just those pesky insects, but you won’t eat that food, because you’re not stupid. If you eat roach killer or weed killer, you get sick and die. Yet GMO food contains these chemicals that do just that — kill living things, including animals. Scientists fuse the genes of pesticidal bacteria into seeds that grow into pest-killer food, and millions of Americans eat it, as if it were food. Currently, 93% of soy, canola and cottonseed oil is GMO, so is 86% of corn and 95% of sugar beets. GMO rice is on the cutting board too.

Nerve Gas and Agent Orange Food

If you combine fluoride, bleach and pesticide with ammonia, you would create a toxic gas, like nerve gas. But ammonia is used in all kinds of food, all across America, to stave off infections, bacteria and the viruses so prominent in mass animal feeding operations that supply “Fast Food America.” Be sure not to cook those meats and fries at high heat! Health insurance companies invest in Fast Food, knowing that you will get sick and buy their policies and spend thousands in hospitals getting “sick care.”

Soon, most Agriculture in America will be dosed with 2,4-D, half of the ingredients of Agent Orange, used to defoliate the forests of Vietnam. Yes, children will be WALKING on this like the soldiers did in Vietnam. We will look back on this period as the time when dumb humans poisoned themselves with known carcinogens. So, what’s the solution? Don’t Eat Cancer!

Dietary tips for women with heavy menstrual bleeding

Many women experience heavy menstrual bleeding, a condition called menorrhagia, that warrants medical attention. (1) For some women, attention from a medical professional is necessary, because underlying factors such as polyps, fibroid tumors and hormonal disturbances could be at hand. For others, it's simply a frustration in that the duration and heaviness of their flow is more of a nuisance than a health concern. In fact, nearly 30 percent of premenopausal women complain of heavy bleeding, yet only 10 percent of them have blood loss to the extent that puts them in the category of women who have menorrhagia. (2)

Either way, a change in diet may help reduce heavy menstrual bleeding. As is the case in most instances when seeking relief from symptoms or even a complete reversal of a condition, when healthy dietary changes are made, health is restored.

Foods that fight heavy menstrual bleeding

In fact, according to Dr. Christiane Northrup, a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a leading authority in women's heath, it's essential for women dealing with heavy periods to eat a hormone-balanced diet that is rich in healthy fats and low in high-glycemic carbohydrates. "Eliminating all conventionally produced dairy foods (even low-fat ones) for at least three months often helps as well," she said. (3)

Therefore, replacing white breads, salty snacks and sweets with low-glycemic foods such as broccoli, kidney beans, spinach and bulgur wheat is beneficial (1, 4). Healthy fats include ones rich in ideal ratios of omega-3s and omega-6s such as walnuts, avocados and extra-virgin coconut oil. (5)

Dr. Northrup also suggests eating fruits and vegetables that offer large amounts of vitamins A, C and E, explaining that they can help improve menorrhagia symptoms. (1) Such foods include cherries, tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, citrus fruits and squash.

Brussels sprouts, for example, are not only ranked as having a "very low" gylcemic index by The World's Healthiest Foods website but also considered an excellent source of vitamin C and are a vegetable that contains omega-3 fatty acids. (1)

7 Health Benefits of Blueberries

7 Health Benefits of Blueberries

blue
Blueberries are absolutely one of my favorite foods to eat. I try to eat them as often as possible and just love them in my morning Blueberry Superfood shake that make with my Ninja blender.
Native to North America, blueberries are rich in proanthocyanin, the natural antioxidant that has been proven to fight cancer, lose weight and give you glowing young skin.
Natural medicine has long held that these round purple berries give long-life and health benefits that far exceed their tiny size.

Blueberry Nutrition Facts

Blueberries are one of the most nutrient dense foods in the world and contains large levels and a broad range of antioxidants. The ORAC score of blueberries is an incredible 9,621 which makes it one of the highest antioxidant foods in the world. Consuming just one cup of blueberries will provide you with the following nutrients:
  • Resveratrol
  • Gallic acid
  • Lutein
  • Zeaxanthin
  • Vitamin K (36%)
  • Vitamin C (25%)
  • Manganese (25%)
  • Fiber (5g 17%)

Blueberries Research on Gallic Acid

Of all the nutritional components of the blueberry, gallic acid stands out for a couple reasons. One, most people have never heard of it and it is definitely worthy of mention.
Second, it has been thoroughly researched. So it’s safe to assume that the health claims laid out here are anything but “experimental!”
Third, as the research indicates, gallic acid is a powerful anti-fungal / anti-viral agent and is an extremely effective antioxidant.
This combination makes gallic acid rich foods like blueberries a natural medicine powerhouse not to be reckoned with!

Top 7 Health Benefits of Blueberries

After learning about the nutritional facts of blueberries, I’m sure you can see how challenging it was to narrow down the Top Health Benefits to just seven. But after some extensive research, I feel pretty confident that this list does the mighty purple fruit justice!
1. Anti-aging – Antioxidants are your best friend to keep Father Time at bay. They help reverse damage done by toxins and free radicals and help your body defend itself against dangerous pathogens.
Not only are blueberries rich in antioxidants as a whole, they are especially rich in proanthocyanidins, which have been observed to have additional anti-aging properties in several animal studies.
Much of the research has linked this to the ability of proanthocyanidins to reverse inflammation, the #1 of chronic disease in the world. Inflammation taxes the body like no other and causes heart disease, diabetes, cancer and almost every illness known to man.
2. Brain – Because they contain such a high amount of phenols, particularly gallic acid, blueberries are known as “neuro-protective agents.” According to researchers from Iran, this means that they can literally protect our brains from degeneration, neurotoxicity and oxidative stress.
You may be interesting to know that some other foods that are high in gallic acid and are known for their brain power are:
  • Blackberries
  • Cashews
  • Hazelnuts
  • Mangos
  • Plums
  • Strawberries
  • Green Tea
  • Red Wine
Another study found that consuming more blueberries slowed cognitive decline and improved memory and motor function. The scientists in this study believed these results were due to the antioxidants in blueberries protective the body from oxidative stress and reducing inflammation.
3. Cancer – Clinical studies have even discovered that, unlike radiation and chemotherapy strategies, gallic acid rich foods like blueberries can kill cancer without harming healthy cells!
Just this past May, for instance, the Journal of Biochemical and Molecular Toxicology published a study evaluating the anticancer effects gallic acid has on breast cancer cells. Like countless studies before, researchers discovered that blueberries and gallic acid slow and even destroys breast cancer.
Blueberry benefits cancer primarily because it’s wide range of antioxidants with gallic acid being the primary and resveratrol also offering support.
4. Digestion – Being a natural source of soluble and insoluble fiber, blueberries can help regulate your gastrointestinal track by just eating a couple handfuls a day.
In fact, a University of Maine researcher Vivian Chi-Hua Wu states that, “Addition of wild blueberries to diet can alter the balance of gut microbe in favor of members of the Actinobacteria phylum.” Wu and her team discovered that wild blueberries have pre-biotic potential, which promotes growth of good bacteria (probiotics) in the colon and promotes digestive and health benefit.
5. Heart Health – The journal Circulation recently published a study showing that eating strawberries and blueberries together has a superpower tag-team effect that actually decreases your risk of heart attack by up to 33%.
After conducting research with more than 93,000 women 25 to 42 years of age, they did not observe this type of benefit in other types of antioxidants that were studied. Blueberry health benefits have also been shown to lower LDL cholesterol, raise HDL cholesterol and lower blood pressure.
6. Skin – Blueberry extract skin care products are becoming very popular around the world. It has been reported that the wide spectrum of vitamins and minerals help restore hormone balance, which counteracts acne.
Also, blueberries contain resveratrol which has been proven to reduce damage from over-sun exposure and can naturally darken your skin. Along with blueberry skin benefits, they have also been shown to heal macular degeneration and improve vision.
7. Weight Loss – Being low in calories, low on the glycemic index and high in fiber, everyone has at three reasons to eat blueberries to lose weight! According to the Mayo Clinic:
Because low glycemic index foods are absorbed more slowly, they stay in your digestive tract longer. This is why these foods are sometimes called slow carbs. These foods may help control appetite and delay hunger cues, which can help with weight management. Balanced blood sugar also can help reduce the risk of insulin resistance.

Healthy Blueberry Recipes

To preserve their nutritional content, make every effort to eat blueberries in their fresh, natural form. This isn’t to say, however, that making some my favorite pumpkin blueberry pancakes is unhealthy for you. I just want to stress the importance of implementing more anti-oxidant rich fruits and vegetables to fight cancer and to slow aging.
One of my favorite raw blueberry recipes is blueberry pudding made with coconut milk and probiotic-rich kefir!

Hemp Seed Oil Summer Healing Ointment

Hemp Seed Oil Summer Healing Ointment

Summer brings all kinds of extra bumps, scrapes and bug bites – the answer to this is a healing ointment that you can create at home using hemp seed oil and a few other ingredients.
Hemp seed oil is legal in all 50 states and most countries and is available in the refrigerated section of your local natural foods store. Be sure to ONLY purchase hemp seed oil which is stocked in the refrigerated case at the store because hemp seed oil goes rancid when it is stored on the shelf. Hemp seed oil is a very fresh product and should have a fresh “grassy and nutty” fragrance when you open the bottle.
    hemp-ointment
This recipe also uses kokum butter – a seed butter from the kokum fruit in the mangosteen family. Kokum fruit is frequently used to treat allergies. Kokum is not a tree nut, nor is it related to the coconut or peanut. It makes a wonderful hard butter that absorbs into the skin very quickly. I’ve really fallen in love with kokum butter lately and I hope you will too after you make this amazing healing ointment.
The ointment contains a medicinal herbal essential blend that is antiseptic and anti-inflammatory including: lavender, rosemary, thyme and tulsi (holy basil).
    Summer Hemp Healing Ointment Recipe
    3/4 cup of kokum butter
    2 tbsp of beeswax
    1/4 cup hemp seed oil
10 drops of lavender essential oil
10 drops of rosemary essential oil
10 drops of thyme essential oil (I like the red thyme essential oil but you can use any kind you like.)
10 drops of tulsi (holy basil) oil
    Preparation:
Gently melt the kokum butter, beeswax and hemp seed oil together, no more than 140 degrees. Remove from heat and pour into a glass jar that will be the final storage container. Add all of the essential oils and stir. Refrigerate after cooling on the counter. This ointment does not need refrigeration if it is used within 2 – 3 months but it should be kept out of hot summer temperatures.
I loved using this ointment after getting a bruise and knee scrape while hiking and also on the mosquito bites. It was handy to carry in my backpack and soothed and cleaned up the wound nicely. I used a thick coat and allowed it to sit on my knee and then wiped it off along with the dirt and blood. I then applied a second, thinner coat to treat the wound.
Thank you to Hempista.com for this wonderful article!
